Hi Everyone,

My name is Suzanne and I am the Community Education Specialist at Great Explorations Children's Museum in St. Pete, Fl. I am working on creating programs and/ or educational resources to help Autistic children and their families enjoy the museum in the best way possible. I would love to hear your input on what you all think are important elements to be added. I was given the idea of having a guide of the museum so families could plan their visit so the children wouldn't be surprised and overwhelmed. Any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Suzanne, Thank you so much for your concern and interest in our special children. I would like to discuss the possibility with you and find out what the best direction for us would be. Let me know how I or one of our "Secret Agents" could get in touch with you. And again, thanks for thinking of us. Dr. Ron Great Explorations Children's Museum 34687

A few things come to mind: Hands on activities. Quiet atmosphere, calming if that makes sense. I havent' been to great explorations in years. I can't remember everything you guys have there. Every child is unique, while one might be interested in one topic, the other may be completely not interested..so letting the kids bring their own comfort items would be good. ex: cars if that is their interest and helps them to self sooth. If there are things the children can't touch, maybe roping off that secton, or printing out some signs that say "STOP" in red letters. They teach PECS in school, as far as I know, and most children who are non verbal, understand what the signs mean. I think animals would be a great idea, learning experience for those with autism. Not reptiles though, just make sure and tell the kids before hand what to expect. Thank you so much by the way. I'll think of more things tomorrow, It's midnight, so my brain is a bit foggy LOL, Kim
