1. How did you hear about the American Asperger's Association (i.e. internet search engine, school, library, doctors office, existing member, etc) and what benefits are you looking to gain from our family?

Answer: Your video commentating on a Larry King Live show (subject: autism-vaccination debate) was listed on YouTube, along with the segments of that show. I was pleasantly surprised to find that your organization sides with Dr. Bernadine Healy and those who feel that the question needs to be explored further.

2. Do you or any adult relative, friend, etc. have or suspect you/they have an autism spectrum disorder, for example Asperger's Syndrome? If yes, please share your/their story with us. It will help us to get to know you better, and many of our members will be able to easily relate and bond with you.

Answer: I do not have Asperger's, though I may have had mild characteristics of Asperger's as a child (undiagnosed). I have known adults or soon-to-be adults who have Aperger's, but that is not the reason for my interest in the subject.

3. Do you have or care for a child that has or you suspect that they have an autism spectrum disorder, for example Asperger's Syndrome? If yes, please share your/their story with us. It will help us to get to know you better, and many of our members will be able to easily relate with and bond with you.

Answer: My son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS by a neurologist in 1996, and then diagnosed with Asperger's some years later by a renowned neurologist at UCLA. He has had immune and autoimmune issues from a fairly early age, along with a history of interruption during pregnancy (bleeding and influenza during first and second term), diarrhea as a toddler, frequent infections, autoimmune symptoms during those infections, ear infections, allergic response to amoxicillin, asthma, sinusitis, costochondritis, ITP for which he was treated with gamma globulin therapy (which resulted in increased platelet count but also in lessening of his "autistic characteristics" and an end to a daily cough that he had had for years prior to the gamma globulin therapy), Tourette's Syndrome (which started in his kindergarten year, the same year that he was his asthma symptoms became life-threatening and the same year that he received the standard series of kindergarten immunizations), and psychotic episodes (started within two weeks of receiving a flu vaccination w/no previous history before that vaccination). Family history includes toe-walking, schizophrenia, asthma, Tourette's, and death of a relative in WWII after he was immunized on a navel vessel.

4. Do you work in any field with people on the autism spectrum disorder? If so, what do you do? How long have you been in the field? Examples would be a doctor, therapist, teacher, aide, ym/wca employee, caregiver etc... Also, if you are local to the Tampa Bay Area, would you be interested in speaking at any of our informational support group meetings in Pinellas Park?

Answer: I have worked for school districts as a medical aid in Special Ed. Currently, I am pre-med as an undergrad, with the hope of beginning research on immune response/autoimmunity sometime this year or next. My career goal is neroimmunology or related area.

5. Are you local to the Tampa Bay Area? More specifically the Pinellas County area? If so, would you be interested in attending our twice monthly informational support group meetings in Pinellas Park? After approved, be sure to mark in your profile that you are local so that you will be able to receive emails regarding local information and events.

Answer: I live in Ventura County, California.

Does toe walking have anything to do with Asperger's? My son-in-law has ADD and is a toe walker and now my grandson at almost 3 is doing it too.

3 Re: Answers to questions asked on Tue May 19, 2009 12:07 pm

That's an interesting question. Around 2000, I was a part of a Tourette's Syndrome forum. At that time, I was curious about every nuance of Tourette's and related disorders. My son was a toe-walker, I was beginning to recall that my brother had had very tight hamstrings we were growing up, so tight that he could not sit on his haunches like most kids. And a Special Ed. teacher had had a conversation with me regarding the high frequency of tight leg/tendon tissues of many of the disabled children she had worked with. I already was familiar with the immune dysfunction of many children with neuro disorders by then, and was also familiar with the correlation between interruption during pregnancy (maternal bleeding/spotting during pregnancy) and autism. Also, not long after, research on PANDAS and research on flu during pregnancy leading to schizophrenia was being released. There was other data that my mind was beginning to collect, I won't trouble you with everything...but what I was beginning to wonder boiled down to this: Yes, genetics are at play. How important is the environment? If a person predisposed to immune dysfunction AND neuro disorders experiences a severe disruption during pregnancy, how many systems are affected? Is this a possible link between the nuero, immune, and musculoskeletal abnormalities (toe walking, etc.) we often see in children simultaneously who are primarily diagnosed with autism or Tourette's? I posed this question to a researcher from Yale in early 2000, and he confirmed that this was a possible explanation for the curious links between systems where we would not expect to see a link. I do not know how significant this idea would be, as I am certain that not all children who are toe walkers have autism or Tourette's, and certainly not all individuals with Tourette's or autism have come from a pregnancy with obvious interruption, yet enough data exists to inquire further.

Provocative for sure. I'm keeping my eye on my grandson who is almost 3 because he isn't speaking well yet, not clearly but acts out what he wants to say. We're waiting for a speech assessment and it's a long wait. Sometimes he gets angry or maybe frustrated and starts throwing things around and at people.

5 Re: Answers to questions asked on Wed May 20, 2009 11:39 am

He is in good hands. You sound wonderful and supportive. With the knowledge that I have now, if I were to start again with another child with the same issues, I think I would have a lot more fun and worry a lot less. These are great kids, and the obstacles my sons overcame made much of the person that I am today. Enjoy, stay on top of things (as I know you are/will), and take lots of pictures. Time goes by so quickly Smile My well wishes go out to you.
