Richard lost his first tooth today. We knew at least one, if not both of the bottom two front teeth must have been loose because they had moved cross-ways over each other. Of course, he doesn't understand enough to tell us that they are loose or even different and if we ask to see, he runs away from us with his hands clamped over his mouth... so yeah, not really happening there either. But finally last night (in the middle of the night, of course), he seemed to understand at least a little bit about what was happening and thought there was something really wrong so he woke daddy up in a panic that there was something wrong with his tooth and finally let Daddy take a look at it. Daddy explained to him the best he could that it was a completely normal thing and that it will eventually fall out and that when it does, to bring it right away to Mom or Dad. (Really, he is incapable of understanding the whole tooth fairy thing, at least right now... so we're not even going to try and bother with that yet) He seemed mostly placated, and kept repeating over and over (much to Colin's dismay at 3 in the morning) that he would be sure to give the tooth to us when it came out until he finally fell asleep again.
Well, ever since my car accident I've been getting massages every Monday morning at 10... Richard usually does a pretty good job of sitting and playing with his cars or with his DS or whatever... Every now and again, he'll come up beside me and pat my arm, which doesn't bother the therapist (I've explained to the therapist about Richard's autism and he understands, but especially since he generally stays put, everything is usually rosy) so we let him do what he does. Well, he did that today, I felt him near my arm, he told me that I was "very nice" and then sat back down. I didn't think anything of it at the time, since it was a pretty usual occurrence.
We hit up the grocery store on the way home and that's when I noticed that he had a gap in his teeth. I started questioning him about it. "Did you swallow it?" "No. I left it at your doctor." "Oh, did you leave it on the table (by where he sits) or did you put it in your blue bag (full of toys)?" "No, I gave it to you right away like Daddy said." *slaps forehead* So when he was up by the table that time, he had laid his tooth down next to me without saying anything about it, neither myself nor the therapist noticed and it likely got brushed off the table to be stepped on, crushed, whatever. *sigh* There's always the next tooth to save, right?
But at any rate, enjoy some gap tooth grins anyway. I had to bribe these pictures out of him. He never wants his picture taken anymore... kids. I swear.
And before you ask, yes, he and daddy both got a haircut yesterday. And he did great, for the second time ever.
