As I continue to see clients in my office I can now idenitify my clients correctly. I can not believe how many clients I have missed as having Aspergers Syndrome. So is the history of this component of neural development which is not almost never discussed (and certainly never taught) in medical schools and psychiatric residency programs. Oh sure, a few, but look how many psychiatrists are out there and how many know anything about Aspergers Syndrome. So if someone with AS, and trust me, I'm a doctor (okay, a doctor with a sense of humor) comes to a psychiatrist with a problem the psychiatrist and/or doctor will treat the symptom such as ADHD, OCD, ODD, or whatever. Not that this is all bad however the physician/provider does not really understand what the AS kid or adult can or can not do and this is the key reason that failures with physicians/providers can and do occure. For example, this week I reviewed a young man about 22 or 23 with his mother. He was a very sharp looking fellow, very healthy-runs and lifes weights, and is a Marine reservist. Under certain areas of pressure/stress/situations he automatically shuts down as a protective mechanism. This is a strong symptom of AS and needs to be addressed by the military so that he and/or others are safe. Now I am not sure he has AS however he has an aspect of AS that needs to be further evaluated. Had I not been familiar with AS I would never have thought in this direction. Just a thought. Dr. Ron

There needs to be more awareness! Knowing what I know now about AS, there is a young man that I went to daytreatment with. His was dx with bipolor with psychotic features. The counselors there did not seem to like him, he was bakeracted frequently because of his facial expressions, he would smile when a topic like someone dying would come up. He only talked about photography. He was labeled as self abusive because he would hit his head *which lead to bakeracts* when the counselor would ask him to talk about something else. I don't know if he had AS, but he definitily had autistic traits such as one sided conversations, facial expressions, and hand flapping. I think he was misdiagnosed. He was also attending college at night SPJC, and went to daytreatment from 8am-1pm. M-F until medicaid cut services to daytreatent. I think there should be a HUGE conference where all doctors/medical professionals, mental health counselors ETC. should attend to raise some awareness.

[b]One of my main goals is to educate health care providers how to ID and Tx persons with AS as well as anything on the ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorder). This is actually one of our main goals for American Aspergers Association and a group forum such as this can be one of the most important ways of education. I am not sure how many health care providers participate in these forums; I also speak at seminars, conventions, clubs, etc. When I speak to clubs such as Rotary, etc. my title is usually something like "It's Not What You Think" or "How to Keep Your Mind Alive", etc. I have to title my talks to some groups that fit for them and I always bring in the mental process of AS.
