What are your fears concerning your child; or yourself; or in general; in terms of Autism/Aspergers?

For my child: I fear she will have a hard time in school, I am not going to let her get bullied, even if I have to homeschool her. Besides that, no fears. She is getting early treatment, in hopes to prevent nasty comorbids, and the ones she already has. I fear that she will always have an issue with fear, as I did and do.

Me: No fear of Aspergers, it's actually pretty awesome, and there are alot of "us" Now, the comorbids that like to pester those with A.S.; I fear those will not go away. Examples being anxiety issues.

That the government will decide "people like us" should be rounded up and kept somewhere, and treat us like they did Native Americans or as if we were mentally ill and unable to be productive members of society.

Then again, if being a productive member of society means to sacrifice my individuality for the sake of the collective, I wouldn't want to be part of it any more... but I still wouldn't want to be "put" where the PTB decide I belong.

I'd rather use the word concern than fear. With fear one automatically gives up some control to that fear. Fear can isolate or immobilize people. Concerns? Sure, there are concerns. One concern I had right away was when, after about a year of reading/studying up on Aspergers, I realized that most articles, books etc. on AS were written for the parents of "the child" with AS. I am past 45 years old and just learned I have this and there's so few resources. You can find them if you dig! It's been quite "freeing" and validating to learn about it though, that's for sure... concerns? Just that people think I'm "crazy" and don't believe me. I don't like it that SO many people never heard of this... just as I had not before. Thanks for the forum.

I'm with you. Fear is sooooooooo negative. I'm about to turn 44 myself, and when I was researching AS and thought I might have it, everyone tried to talk me out of it saying, "oh I doubt it" and "probably not" but I think part of that was that they didn't realize that I had a positive attitude about AS. They were reacting like you would if someone said they thought they might have a dread disease - trying to be reassuring in their NT sort of way.

I'm well-accustomed to being considered both crazy and incredibly rational simultaneously. That is the oxymoron that is me.

That's a lovely picture, Sybil. Is that where you live?
