I'm not sure if it's the same in everyone else's city, but here, especially on the interstate off-ramps and major intersections, there is always a homeless person begging for money. Some of them are even begging for work these days. Every now and again, I see someone give them money, but more often than not, they get ignored. Hell, I've always ignored them. Usually because I never carry cash, but also because I stereotype them and figure they are going to use the money to buy booze or drugs.

Well, today after meeting Crystal for lunch at Bob Evans I came home via the interstate because it's much faster. I end up the first in line waiting at the red light and as usual, there's the homeless guy sitting right next to me. His sign said something about being laid off... I dunno, I didn't really bother to read it. I start ignoring him as usual, but then I'm also smelling the leftover food (which I'd intended on giving Colin) from lunch... which was pretty extensive, as I'd really already eaten a little something before I'd gotten the invite. So after thinking about it for a minute, I open my door (as my window doesn't work) and motion the guy over and hand him the food. I told him that I never carry cash, but I just happened to have this food here and he was welcome to have it if he wanted it. I didn't have any silverware with which he could eat it with, but I figured he could compromise easily enough, there were 3 or 4 pieces of bread in there he could use to grab the food up with. He looked slightly disappointed, but with as skinny as he was, the amount of food that was there to me looked like a feast for him. Anyway, he did thank me and sat back down but didn't start digging in or anything. I hope he eats it and was truly happy with it rather than pissed that it wasn't money...

It's a tough situation for me too. I watch intervention every monday, so I'm learning about heroin use, and how most end up homeless and beg for money "they call it piggybacking" for their next dose or whatever. I'm usually concerned that I am enabling someone to use if i give them money. With that said, It's hard for me not too, if I have a few dollars, or change in the car. Years ago it was kindof an obsession and the counselor I was seeing kind of scourned me about talking to the homeless. I would pull over and talk to them, tell them to call the churches etc.. and shelters and try to help. I was pretty nieve and even gave one man a ride. Not all homeless people are drunks/drug addicts. I believe a majority of the homeless population are actually entitled to social security disability due to mental illness preventing them from keeping a stable residence and job. They should IMO be taken care of. ex) group home placement and/or mental health facility placement. I have no answers really, but the entire situation is sad... except for the druggies, to them I think they need to check themselves in somewhere, go to the hospital, whatever...but get clean.

Personally, if I ever see a homeless person, I give them money, even if they are druggies. So long as they don't mug me, I don't have a problem with them. My grandfather himself was an alchoholic, and, at times, was homeless. I guess you could say it's a vein of my strong compassion. But if they want to spend their money on drugs that's their choice. Giving them money doesn't entitle you to the responsibility of their actions. And as was said, most of the homeless aren't druggies. I've seen signs people had that said "will work for food." Once, at walmart, my mom had just checked out and paid for $100 worth of groceries, and their was a man with a sign like that, and she gave him pretty well anything we didn't need, which was probably half. My stepdad was pissed when she got home, but I was proud to have a mother that'd do that. So I say give them money, even if it's just a few dollars. But if they look like junkies, avoid giving them 3 dollars, because I've heard from some local junkies here you can buy a joint for about $3 in a lot of places.
